What is the Difference between Meditation, Creative Visualization and Segment Intending

One of my favorite introductory books into Alignment is Abraham Hicks: The Law of Attraction. Within the book, Abraham speaks of different ways to ease yourself into Alignment and I wanted to share and discuss them with you here.

The three ways Abraham discusses are meditation, a workshop (creative visualization), and segment intending. What are the differences between them? And how can I apply these to my real life?

Let’s start with Meditation: From the book directly,A segment in which you are intending to quiet your conscious thinking so you can sense your inner world. You should identify your intention before entering. Withdrawing your focus from the outer world and opening your inner passageway.”

What does this look like in real life? This looks like 10-20 minutes of being with yourself, with the intention of quieting your “thinking mind” so that you can begin to receive and allow the flow from your higher self, (YOU), to you. There are many ways to do this and here are a few of my favorites:

  1. Guided meditations where you’re putting your attention on a pre-recorded guide such as the Abraham Hicks Guided meditations or similar APS like Calm

  2. Self Meditation where you sit with yourself with the intention of focusing on the breath and releasing thoughts when you notice you’ve caught on to one.

  3. Walking meditation where you go outside for 10-20 minutes and try to put your attention on everything outside you, not your mind within you. Notice the birds chirping. Notice the breeze on your face. Notice the trees rustling. Notice your feet on the ground and how they feel. Every time you catch yourself in your mind again, “Thinking” simply say “THINKING” out loud and go back to noticing things outside of your mind.

What is the difference between Mediation, going into a creative visualization workshop and segment intending? Abraham speaks of this in The Law of Attraction series and in this post I go into more detail about the difference between the three.

Workshop/Creative Visualization is a segment during which you are intending to give specific and precise thought to that which you are wanting so you can bring forth clarity (by the power of attraction). You are pondering with specificity and detail and clear thought. For instance, if I’m feeling the desire to start traveling soon but I don’t know where to go, I sit and close my eyes and start imagining myself starting to search on the internet for places to stay. I visualize finding the perfect place, in the perfect location, with the perfect weather. I keep doing this and as I do I allow more images to come in that add positive momentum to the visualization. I stop when it begins to feel like work.

Segment Intending is when you set out to consciously recognize that you are moving into a segment in which you identify that which you are intending is different from the last segment, so you stop to re-identify that which you want and desire and intend in the next segment. Before you begin the next moment you’ll take a moment to address what it is you’re intending to bring into the moment and what you’re intending to get out of it. For instance, before you pick up your phone, ask yourself: What is my intention in doing so? What am I looking to do and gain from it? What am I expecting from this next moment in time?

Abraham also mentions the great value of being happy before setting your intention. You are a vibrational being and the way you feel is your point of attraction. Only from the vibration of being happy can you attract that which you are truly wanting. The secret is, only you only know what uplifts you and before setting an intention it is a good idea to choose to fill your life with things that support you feeling good.

Abraham also speaks of two major hindrances to you being the deliberate creator of your experience. First is the influence of others over you that may have different intentions than you do. This may present itself in feeling pressure to do something from our partners, our parents, our friends, our media, etc. The other major block is the influence of your old habits, including the momentum of the intention of the segment before the present one. We are constantly evolving, unlearning, and learning more. As we do, we are learning more about our preferences and updating our desires. Untangling the power of the past, including our past beliefs, on our current moment helps us create the spaciousness inside to set new intentions that we can begin to build momentum in the direction of the life we desire to build.
